Educational Objectives
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate improved knowledge of the impact of patient adherence on both health and economic outcomes
  2. Identify patients with diabetes who fail to practice effective self-management behaviors and choose alternative strategies to reach desired behavioral change
  3. Use clinical support tools to encourage productive patient-provider communication
  4. Employ patient-centered communication skills and competencies to promote self-management behavior and treatment adherence
  5. Document improvement in patient’s self-management behavior and treatment adherence

Accreditation

Designation of Credit
The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This workshop is designated for patient safety/risk management credits.

AAFP CME Credit

This activity, Talking Diabetes With Your Patients: Practical Strategies for Overcoming Barriers, from June 20, 2010-June 19, 2011, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 8 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Of these credits, 4 conform to the AAFP criteria for evidence-based CME clinical content. CME credit has been increased to reflect 2 for 1 credit for only the EB CME portion. When reporting AAFP credit, report total Prescribed and Elective credit for this activity. It is not necessary to label credit as evidence-based CME for reporting purposes.

The EB CME credit awarded for this activity was based on practice recommendations that were the most current with the strongest level of evidence available at the time this activity was approved. Since clinical research is ongoing, AAFP recommends that learners verify sources and review these and other recommendations prior to implementation into practice.
